The Promise of the Prophet

Matthew 21:1-9

200 years before Zechariah: Isa 62.11 Indeed the Lord has proclaimed To the end of the world: “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Surely your salvation is coming; Behold, His reward is with Him, And His work before Him.’ “

Then we have Zechariah’s prophecy: Zech 9.9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.”

What kind of king would this be, riding young untrained donkey? What kind of promise this, uttered 520+ years before time?

Foundation of replacement Temple already laid and progress came to screeching halt – “neighbors” protested to king, got lobbyists to make case it shouldn’t be completed. Got executive order, by force of arms made construction stop.  15 years went by, change of administration but no effort made by residents of Jerusalem to get back to work… either on Temple or repairing wall. Discouraged by opposition? second class materials? generally apathetic, got used to the rut? Grace period ended, God sent two men to light fire of enthusiasm, stir up people to go back to work, finish what they started. Those two: Haggai and Zechariah (Ezr. 5).

Message given not so much to criticize, chastise but encourage, give powerful reason for renewed diligence.

A. what

look up

attention-getter people world over, throughout time apparently need – over and over used, >1000+, Old & New, God and angels

don’t have eyes closed… all the time, so what’s problem? too often not considering what is of greatest, even eternal significance

residents of Jerusalem looking at broken wall, enemies; men in field looking at sheep when world was changing almost w/i sight

wake up

pay attention to where on timeline, next big thing God has planned… esp. when he tells enough to know what it is he will do

don’t be fooled by what you see, frequently not what you expect but… does it fit what God said through prophets comes next

when you know that, what does God expect his people to be doing – working for the King, welcoming the King when he arrives

rise up

returned Jews w/o any word from king went back to work when Haggai/Zechariah encouraged, finished Temple reconstruction

shepherds heard announcement from angels, as soon as got breath back got up and went to see what was happening in stable

Jews of Jesus’ day got up and followed him into city – is logical we should rise up and follow him, finishing what he started

B. why

he promised

prophets spoke but not own words, “holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit”… was God’s words/promises

OT prophecies not last word from God, more promises in NT – came first time with salvation, task  bigger than that

since kept promise to come riding donkey, must be coming again… still future for us but not any less certain than first advent

he’s coming

was enough to stir Jews to finish Temple, was ready when King arrived with glory that made it far greater than Solomon’s

baby laid in humble manger grew up, ministered to his people – day finally arrived when crowned… handmade with thorns

witnesses couldn’t recognize kind of salvation / deliverance he brought – was best kind, like no other, meets need perfectly

his Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem didn’t look like much of triumph – was dead in less than a week… is so God’s way

it’s a big delivery

Heb 9.28 “Christ …will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.”

will be as obvious then to his people who he is, what he is about as to shepherds, children outside Jerusalem, will be greeted with Hosannas from all who love him and welcome his appearing

Mary delivered a baby that came about by God’s direct doing who brought his healing and forgiveness to lost world

C. when

soon

whatever date is on God’s timeline, are more than 2500 years closer to it now than when Zechariah first spoke God’s message

for world that seems teetering on edge of total disaster, we need guaranteed promise there truly is hope, sooner is better

how bad must it get before God says “enough” – not a good question, is better one should give attention to

how many more Jesus came to save still need to be reached with good news of Gospel? list getting shorter daily but…

a surprise

disciples asked Jesus when big day was scheduled – Jesus response “not your business”, iow you have other business

every indication from Bible: will be sudden, no further warning – should expect it anytime, will still be surprised

if we knew, would be no need for faith, trusting in One we cannot see to do what he has promised everyone will see

it’s finished

last thing Jesus declared from cross: “it is finished”… and he was right, he had paid penalty for sin in full for all his people

for salvation to be complete, is more to be done – must be “proclaimed to the end of the world” first (Isaiah) and Great Commission… “disciples of all nations”

Jesus started the work, gave examples of how to do it, told his disciples to go make more disciples who make more disciples

and then there’s the Curse, God’s response to Adam and Eve’s sin in Garden – awful consequences of it need to be lifted

sure seems like “whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now” (Rom 8.22) must be about ready to deliver and be delivered

Look! Wake up! Your King is coming! Indeed he is returning sooner than we think. He is your king, not someone else’s, yours if you believe in him. And doesn’t keep his distance, comes to you. Don’t be afraid, his coming the first time is gentle.

To have real hope from prophets’ message, requires more than just believing Matthew wrote truth, that prophecy was indeed fulfilled. Must believe not only is Christ a good Savior for people 2000 years ago, he is good Savior to you.

But will he ever come in power? On a white horse, called Faithful and True, next time to judge and make war.

Rev. 19:11-16 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

Christ’s church in similar place as Jews of Zechariah’s day – our King is coming, next time on a horse not a donkey, and his church isn’t finished yet. Christ is the one building his church and he uses his people as fellow laborers to build it with him. Promises of the prophets give genuine hope for good outcome, that just as he came before, will come again. Also give much reason to be busy.

In the meantime, don’t lose the wonder – that he is your king who came to save you and comes again to receive you to himself. Only by his grace is this possible, only by the power of God himself can the baby who came to earth in humble circumstances, gave his life on a cruel cross and then rose from the dead be the Lord of Glory.

Greet the Saints

Philippians 4:21-23

Verse 20 seemed like end of letter: “Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.” A prayer to finish what Paul wanted to tell his friends in Philippi. Perhaps secretary told him was more room at bottom of page, anything else? Typical Paul, of course had more he could write! So includes affectionate greeting, and important encouraging word about advance of Gospel. Would mean much to Philippians to hear how support for Paul’s ministry bearing fruit, people being added to Christ’s church b/c of their sacrificial giving.

Something comes through loud and clear here: whether single local church, all churches in our community, those in distant lands, we are all in this together. Just as hardship for believers in one location stirs up compassion among fellow Christians elsewhere, Gospel advance provides joy and encouragement in same way. Often think first of what we have in common with other believers – is true we hold much together: beliefs, experiences, joys and sorrows. Most important is who we have in common, Christ Jesus, who draws us to himself and to one another.

Writer identifies who he is addressing, where they are, and how he expects them to be blessed.

A. who are they

saints

word here used 200+ in NT, appears as “saint” often in Paul’s writings – has in view those known by God as such, not declared to be so by a church b/c of special works they have done

applies to present condition, “those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord” 1Co 1:2

“sainted” in Christ Jesus, set apart, devoted to God’s use – made holy, God said “be holy…”

“Holiness may be described by these five necessary ingredients of it. 1. An aversion to and hatred of all sin. 2. A contempt of the present world, in comparison of the future. 3. A delight in the worship and society of God. 4. Zeal and activity in his service. 5. A hearty love to fellow-creatures, and more especially to fellow-saints.” Isaac Watts

an essential component of our calling – called by God out of sinfulness in world into relationship w/ Jesus and life of holiness

in Christ Jesus

not one option among many, by God’s eternal purpose is only option – describes everyone in Christ, regardless of anything else

salvation both event and process – declared righteous, justified at moment of regeneration, sanctifying/making holy takes time

no first or second class saints – all have equal access to God, receive his grace w/o distinction b/c of who we are, where from

remember: Col 1.27 “…the riches of the glory of this mystery…: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory” – we in him, he in us

the whole church

begins with greetings from Paul and Timothy (1:1) to every saint in Philippi – possibly several house churches by this time

then greetings from all the saints in Rome, city of 1 mil. est., several hundreds of Christians meeting in many locations

really greetings from / fellowship with one another in community of all believers bound together b/c of unity in Christ Jesus

B. where are they

in Rome

by far largest city in world of 1st century, nearest rivals maybe half the size – doesn’t count all traffic passing through city

many people groups, most ethnically diverse in world – socio-economically diverse also: from every segment of society

picture who saints in Rome rubbing shoulders with every day… people w/ connections to people in all parts of the world

the Gospel to all the world made Rome ideal springboard to lands north and west especially… including our hemisphere

should encourage us to think more seriously about sharing Gospel more purposefully with people connected to other places

in Caesar’s household

“the vast network of slaves, freedmen, civil service officials, guards, and other workers who managed the daily operations of the imperial estates and business.”

“it is no common evidence of divine mercy, that the gospel had made its way into that sink of all crimes and iniquities.” Calvin

I’m sure many like to think of Wash. DC as “sink…” – this gives courage to remember Christians in govt, pray for more

those in Caesar’s household particularly thankful for Philippians – first European Christians who helped Paul take Gospel to Rome

in Philippi

much smaller but still strategic city, 40/60 Roman/Greek – included Roman military veterans and families/descendants

many Christians there were poor but… city generally very prosperous – resources there for God to use to spread Gospel

they also had connections to other places – e.g. Lydia a merchant from Asia, engaged in what would be intl. commerce now

more reminders still that God has his people, the saints, spread throughout world and its cultures, more now than ever before

C. how are they blessed

grace

apostle could write “by the grace of God I am what I am” – remember Saul of Tarsus, God’s grace a good thing for him

God’s grace a good thing for everyone, is his grace of faith that brings into family, starts work of making us like Jesus

everything w/o exception we receive from God comes through Christ to us and is all of grace, none of our own merit

is apostle’s sincere desire for all the saints to experience God’s grace through Christ in ongoing way, not just brief periods

unity

greeting is kind often expressed by a hug – not what many tough Mainahs do often… but communicates things words cannot

don’t allow just anyone in personal space… usually only friends we trust – one way fellowship together in Christ is shown

amounts to putting into practice what Jesus prayed for, that we would be one, having unity of purpose and fellowship in him

zoom out some, do we place too much emphasis on denominational distinctives – only things that harm Gospel should separate

community

unity in Christ and the Gospel applies outside walls and borders – we only see tiny piece of Christ’s church that spans globe

all of those who are in Christ Jesus in any part of world are saints, members of one community of millions of individuals

is good when all members of community proclaim same truth, work together to love God and neighbor helping Kingdom grow

If “saint” not to be empty and meaningless label, requires particular kind of life to back it up: growing in our hatred of sin, releasing grip on things of the world, delighting in fellowship with God and his people, serving God in all we do, loving neighbor esp. fellow saints. Cannot be successful on our own, God doesn’t expect us to do only with his help. Has put us together in church families to help one another follow Christ more closely.

Truth is it’s already really hard for saints in many places to make it through the day. We see about some of those places on news, far more never make even local news. They need our encouragement and prayers and faithful example just as we need theirs. Together as we serve Jesus we will face enemies – sometimes we can see them, often not. Can be confident of this – if we are in Christ, his grace will be with us always and guard our souls until we see him face to face.

Misplaced Trust

Jeremiah 48:1-47

Hard to find source of good news these days. All manner of gloom and doom broadcast incessantly whether sound, pictures, printed matter, even shapes much of small group conversation.  With so much negative around, challenge to stay positive and hopeful. Also difficult to avoid thinking world just getting worse every day. Hear it especially when folks are reminiscing, talking about how things used to be before cell phones and social media and artificial intelligence. Our tendency though is to segment things, consider culture and surroundings and history in pieces. Will have better grasp of things when take long view, wide perspective.

If our world really looks like getting worse, going downhill, is mostly b/c we hear about things more quickly and number of people doing things has increased. There are signs that perhaps end of age closer than we realize but not ones that mostly get attention. Is various ways corrupt people practice evil in all strata of life that we usually notice. Largely b/c haven’t really studied / become aware of world history, don’t connect all the dots when reading Bible. And… don’t take basic nature of man seriously enough – man’s fallen nature hasn’t changed since Eden. Degree of corruption may ebb and flow but people today not any worse than since the fall.

Hard words for Moab from God over all armies both in heaven and on earth – Moab as independent nation will not survive his judgment. Overwhelming degree of detail given, God will leave nothing to chance but direct every part of their destruction personally. He is giving ample opportunity for repentance not only to Moab but also other nations he identifies. No room for doubt… YHWH not local tribal deity only concerned w/ Israel and Judah. His reach includes all the world and beyond.

A. not a town will escape

25 places

north to south, east to west, town by town entire land of Moab will be decimated – economy, infrastructure, population

harassment and violence they directed toward Israel turned back on them and more – payment for sin against God and neighbors

disgraced and defeated

not Moab’s first defeat – Ehud, David, Jehoshaphat all defeated them but never to extent as this time – recovered before, not now

had once ridiculed Israel, now they are objects of ridicule (39) as God shows his power over then and their god, Chemosh (7b)

nowhere to hide

may be urged to run for the hills, try to escape destruction – if Chemosh can’t prevail or escape, will be no chance for followers

number of defeats not taken as encouragement to befriend God – instead hardened enmity against YHWH, his people

B. punished for their sin

self-righteousness (7a)

convinced by own efforts they could satisfy any need they might have present or future – any of their gods graded on curve

refused to believe any god would presume to have standard they could not achieve… always worse offenders than them

greed (7a, 33)

productivity of land contributed to greed – Napa Valley of Near East, 100K lambs, 100K fleeces tribute to Israel annually

if they would take pleasure in stuff, God in judgment would strip stuff from them – the few survivors: penniless refugees

pride and complacency (11, 18, 29-30)

content with all they had done by themselves for themselves, saw no reason to strive for investment in future… only the present

would soon realize boasting had no lasting substance behind it – failed to credit God for his part, would withdraw it from them

idolatry (35)

this the worst, underlying source of rest – worshiping gods they believed would give what they wanted, not what they needed

their gods took what was most valuable – worship, children, future – and gave only God’s judgment in return for their sin

rebellion (42-43)

people group began by profound rebellion against God’s law – Lot’s daughter got dad drunk, herself pregnant after Sodom

with God’s help could have broken endless cycle of evil but instead persisted in determination to do things their own way

C. weep for the lost

shouts but not of joy

from youngest to oldest every reason for joy gone, only sorrow and suffering left – desperate enough to be w/o hope

if cries for help, were from wrong god – more likely were cries of rage against true God, trying to believe judgment not just

anguish over destruction

all that was important to them destroyed – for many, stuff and perceived liberty to rebel against authority more valuable than life… not worth living w/o those things

the mighty is broken

they grieved b/c what they thought was their strength failed… refused to even consider there might be an alternative

God’s people grieved b/c could see Moab’s physical brokenness only symptom of spiritual brokenness that God would have fixed

D. promise for the future

no biblical record

people group disappear by name from Bible after destruction – effectively erased from subsequent history, biblical / secular

there is one notable exception: Matt. 1:5 grandmother of King David was Ruth the Moabitess with an enduring legacy in Jesus

not identifiable today

were a few survivors of destruction but never came together to reestablish distinct people group in later history

assimilated into Muslim Arabs?

how will God keep promise to “bring back the captives of Moab in the latter days”, to restore their fortunes? no Bible record

perhaps will be among Arabs in Jordan and surrounding area – Muslims target of approx. 1% missions resources, 2% of missionaries… we can do better… starting right here in America

So how does Jeremiah help us? Is clear man’s basic problem same as always. Since no new information or evidence to contrary, solution to problem the same. Also true result of ignoring God’s answer still the same. Since God kept promise regarding Moab, can rightly expect he will keep other promises about judgment on evildoers. Means we have message of both warning and hope – need to faithfully present both. For everyone like Moabites… convinced they’re good… will disregard conversation about hope… they already have a hope (or think they do) even though false hope. They need to understand truth about how God sees them first, basically take all their hope away and then give what is genuine.

Should be clear that even though we have responsibility to bear witness to truth, God must do his part to change heart / mind of the lost. Best news is God is still doing just that even now and will do so until Jesus comes back. Are people of Moabite heritage in world today – they may not realize it but God knows, some will be part of company from every tribe and tongue and people and nation praising him for eternity. Why? Because they have sought God’s mercy, trusted in him instead of their own gods.

God’s Provision

Philippians 4:19-20

For last 400 years, example after example in just our own land of how God has at opportune times in small and large ways providentially intervened in lives of people. The right kind of summer rain to rescue nearly failed crops, thick fog hiding movement of patriots from enemy, timely supply of small sum of money enabling family avoid being homeless, countless ways God has altered course of individual’s life or nation’s history. Many times credited to coincidence, often hard work, sometimes luck. On occasion, God does get proper credit for his kindness.

Apostle knew history of his people, accounts of God’s actions in previous generations. Also had personal supply of examples – escape in a basket, saved from shipwreck, unharmed by toasted snake. Also knew what his own past had been, how undeserving he was of such gracious care… same true for each of us. These surprising events ones that get attention, God’s providence just as much a factor in widow’s experience when flour and oil for one meal was there day by day for more than 3 years.

Many of these tangible visible ways God has provided yet God by no means limited to such. Granting wisdom, understanding, direction, protection from spiritual harm part of mix also. Those may even be more common though less easily recognized. No hesitation here to declare w/ unshakable confidence God will indeed supply needs of his people.

A. who does it – my God

God himself

often don’t clearly see God’s fingerprints, may be masked by layers of individuals each having part on its way to us, combination of human and at times angelic agents doing God’s work

can also include own efforts as we act on opportunity God orchestrates for us, receive reward for labor according to his plan

sure, are grateful for part others have in supply chain and give thanks – at same time must remember who starts it, directs path all way to end destination

his Father

doesn’t intend any question who apostle referring to – my God – explicit identification especially necessary in pluralistic culture

also makes point where his loyalty lies, to whom ultimate praise, glory, thanksgiving belong… the one who supplies as no other

not God behind the curtain pushing buttons or leaving to autopilot – is God acting according to kind of relationship w/people

our Father

flows from his fatherly love for his children – makes certain child has necessary resources to meet father’s expectations

Jesus made particular connection Matt 7.11 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”

is response to request for daily bread… and that gives indication of how God supplies… abundantly for need we have today – may be more but that much at least

B. what he does – supply your every need

what he knows we need

all we can see is the immediate… know what we plan for future… God often has different plan, supplies in light of complete plan incl. how it intersects with others and their needs

God not confused by needs vs wants vs desires – he supplies in each category according to his purpose for everyone/everything

God knows what we need, just as important the when and the how – he adjusts his supply so as to conform us to Jesus

without missing any

ever make project list, go get supplies, return home, get part way into project, realize essential item didn’t make it to list? – never happens when God makes the list

since God knows all things, what he supplies today sets up for how he expects us to use it tomorrow, maybe not what we plan

all through Christ

this covers part of the how, also makes plain who can expect to receive – since Christ essential part of supply chain, must be in saving relationship with him

Paul told Romans Christ is the heir, we are joint-heirs w/him – apart from him we have no access to his inheritance, blessing

must want God, not just his goodies, and that includes knowing Christ, being in Christ, destined to be like Christ

C. by what measure – according to his glorious riches

superabundantly

remember what Jesus said: if you give good gifts, how much more will your Heavenly Father give good gifts

not a hint of barely enough to get by, make do – God intends to maintain reputation for having glorious riches at his disposal

matters not how many children need much from him… he has more than sufficient to supply abundantly to meet every need

the highest quality

God doesn’t wait for things to go on sale, doesn’t shop clearance rack or open box or refurbished – always provides what is perfectly suited to need

what we accomplish w/ what he supplies is intended to cause people to give God the glory – can’t do that w/ second rate supply

more than enough to share

God rarely supplies only enough for each of us to meet individual need – is true for everything that comes to us from God

gives enough for us to share overflow – when there isn’t overflow and we give anyway, God still meets our need… wash, rinse, repeat

D. for what purpose – for his glory

yes, for our good

this one more area we may differ from God, whether what he supplies really for our good – often cannot immediately see what God intends to do

like all else we experience, God’s purpose in it to make us more like Jesus… in how we speak, how we think and how we act

if it’s important, will be able to see in hindsight how supply really is good – may see more when we get to heaven

more important, for his glory

if WSC #1 correct, man’s chief end is to glorify God – is really what from beginning mankind designed for, to worship/fellowship

1Co 10.31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

not only what we do as God supplies our every need to be done to his glory, can encourage others to give him glory he deserves

now and later

esp. given what we read in last book of Bible, giving glory to God for what he does will not end with this life, continues in heaven

will praise him more since will be able to see / understand more of his purpose, how dependent we really are on his provision

God began supplying our need when sent Son the Lord Jesus. 1Jo 4.10 “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” His supply to us a continuation of that, outworking of his love for us. Most of all, we and all our family/friends/neighbors need a Redeemer, one who takes our place so we escape God’s just wrath. Once that gift of life is ours, he continues on blessing and providing and making us acceptable to him. We can do no less than give him glory forever and ever.

God of All Nations

Jeremiah 46:1-47:7

Chapters 46 thru 51 contain prophecies about what God would cause to happen w/regard to 10 nations occupying nearly a million square miles in ancient world – Egypt, Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Edom, Damascus (Syria), Kedar (Arabian tribes), Elam, Babylon, Chaldea. They span modern nations of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Israel. Secular histories of time and places contain details of movement of armies and peoples, do not include complete descriptions of why they happened. Sure, leaders had own motivations for aggressive actions. God used those motivations and other means in order to bring about his purpose toward his enemies as well as friends.

All 10 nations were acting as enemies to God, deaf to both his pleadings and his warnings. Includes his people the Jews who crossed the line where repentance and deliverance would still be possible. God did not force any of these nations and their leaders and armies to act against their will. Each voluntarily engaged in battle intending to pursue their own goals. God perfectly just in orchestrating outcome to fit his purpose, punish evildoers, bring catastrophe against those determined to overthrow him. No cause whatever to think God cannot do same today as he sees fit.

Starts with Egypt, nation that disregarded YHWH in favor of own gods, oppressed Hebrew children before brought together as independent nation. Finishes with Babylon and land of the Chaldeans, last enemies of Israel and responsible for 70-year exile. Remaining 6 were hostile toward YHWH and tormentors of his people while they were in the land. God has delayed judgment on them for centuries, begins decisive action to protect faithful remnant, give another opportunity to return to him most importantly when he will send his Son Jesus to save them from their sins. And we know from NT how that turned out… source of great blessing for Gentiles.

A. Ruler

knows them by name

general opening announcement: “the word of YHWH …against the nations” – doesn’t stay general, next line: “against Egypt”

shouldn’t surprise us even if it did them, God knows the national name, individual names, specific details of their history including geography and battles

more importantly for us, God didn’t need to read newspaper to find out what he needed to know – could speak intelligently about anything relevant to their future

in our day, knows Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un and Xi Jinping, names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses… and will deal with them according to his plan

heard their boasts

Egypt boasted as Nile flooded banks and inundated Delta, same way they would rise and cover the earth, iow subdue it

God’s response: challenge Egypt w/ her allies (Ethiopia, Somalia, Libya) to battle along w/ Greek mercenaries, backbone of army

even taunts them, v.7, ridiculing puny attempt to follow through on boast – prods into action, show their strength and ability

Warrior God owns the day

long before battle commences God declares outcome – Adonai Yahweh Sabaoth will prevail, totally overcome his enemies

God not backward about declaring his purpose… avenging himself on his enemies, really treating them as they wanted to treat him and his people

they sacrificed things they valued to false gods, insulting true God who deserved their worship – they would be offered up as sacrifice to true God

B. Judge

God uses means

all this a shock to Egyptians, mocking their gods and foretelling ignominious defeat at hands of Babylonians at Carchemish

will previously give them upper hand over those who had sorely harassed Jews, neighbors to the west, the Philistines

regardless of which direction tide of war was flowing, all could be certain was God using weather, fear, strategy to defeat them

God also acts

Deists convinced God made all things, wound up spring, mostly a bystander watching world unwind itself w/o interfering

Bible makes clear God is involved in affairs of men and nations, directing outcome of both good and evil actions

even though he uses means, he takes credit for what happens – over and over told “the LORD” will do this in judgment

we must keep in mind: people often have one goal in mind while God has a different one… in the same series of events

must be careful, we don’t have inside track the way OT prophets did – we cannot know God’s particular purpose in world events we can observe

can rightly say whatever God is doing is right, he is without sin whether we understand what he’s doing or not

his judgment is just

even though his enemies had opportunity to see him at work in Israel, many like Rahab gave him credit, hardship did not cause national repentance, rarely individual change

further confirms his judgment, harsh though it may seem, was warranted – like Pharaoh, further hardened in rebellion

every one of these judgments a minuscule foretaste of judgment to come – no one can honestly say they never had warning

Egyptian practice today like that of Gaza Strip (1/3 orig. Philistia) is Islam, official religion in both – still enemies of God

C. Savior  46:27-28

do not fear

God certainly is Ruler, he is Judge, at same time he is Savior – in midst of dire prophecies he inserts message of genuine hope

has to be one of God’s favorite lines: “don’t be afraid” – much of what he says/does can push us away, yet he draws us in

word not intended for everyone – only those who serve YHWH and not other gods can be confident and genuinely hopeful

he will deliver

matters not where his people are, God has sufficient reach to deliver from captivity – has proved that for Jewish people

yes, did restore them to ancient land from captivity nearby, places far away where had been driven by invading armies

way promise of rest and peace and security completely fulfilled: in Christ’s church, deliverance from oppression of sin

to be encouraged by return of Jews to land of Israel is to stop short of God’s full purpose – to include them in glorious company Rev 5.9 “…out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation”

he will correct

says again to not be afraid b/c hard times aren’t over – has more work to do on his people, work of correcting and conforming

since people still sinful in this life, sanctification not complete, ongoing correction necessary to bring into line w/his expectations

since God is merciful and gracious, he provides hope, opportunity, whatever resources necessary to reach his good goal for us

Enmity against God didn’t end with Babylon or 1st cent. Israel  Diocletian (245-313AD), monument:

Diocletian Jovian Maximian Herculeus Caesares Augusti

for having everywhere abolished the superstition of Christ

for having extended the worship of the gods

Friedrich Nietzsche, a 19th-century German philosopher declared “God is dead”. People don’t need him any more, have science and reason to take up slack. God of our fathers quite thoroughly erased from culture in large portions of modern world. Yet if we are to have hope of rest and peace and security, retreat from lawlessness, must make sure all the generations know of God and his story. Only then will they put their hope in him rather than powerless gods of human definition.

Sharing, Giving and Receiving

Philippians 4:14-18

Had conversation with one at CVAL Thursday, touched on number of topics incl. mind of God. He knows stars by name, number of hairs, his purpose for all people and things, how actions and results are all connected. So much of what touches own lives hidden from us, how what we do intersects with lives of others e.g. This portion of letter to Philippians encourages thinking about impact of what we share with others. Writer doesn’t want readers to get swelled heads, mutes his praise of them some, doesn’t supply nearly as many details as we might appreciate.

Is apparent from remarks here there is more than one way to be involved in Gospel ministry – repeated Bible model one of partnership whether on front line or in support network. Brought out in how Philippians commended for actions. All various ones involved acting under oversight of Christ himself as he orchestrates building of his church. Writes in verse following text about God supplying needs – in our time God often uses variety of means to do actual supplying. He directs his people to that end, often uses unbelievers in process also.

Second theme present here is generosity. Never see in Bible example of “let me see what I can afford”. Instead, often wonder how could they do so much, where did it all come from? So much part of how these folks treated Paul he used them as example to spur Corinthian church to give more abundantly to those in need. They not only knew answer to that question, put their faith into action. (2Cor 8:1-4)

A. fellowship in distress  v.14  emotional / partnership

did well

once again they do well, sending not only substantial gift, also substantial person to deliver – highly regarded church leader

don’t believe Paul surprised they would do that, was fitting with how they helped before – confident they would again when able

at same time did not take for granted they would – our missionaries do same, handwritten thanks for gifts sent, not just printed receipt from mission organization

certainly not done from sense of duty – was expression of affection for missionary who first brought good news to them

did good

the good they did had two-fold purpose: encourage Paul and facilitate work he was doing – added benefit, example to others

is where details / connections only God knows about come into play – like song: if you tell two people and they tell two people

is totally fine we don’t know those things, perhaps better we don’t – important thing we use what God entrusts for good

did share

two ways rendered in Eng.: you shared in my distress/shared my trouble -and- shared with me in my hardship – first more accurate, no words in Gk for “with me”

yes, shared with apostle while he experienced hardship and w/o question a good / commendable thing to do for him

for them to share in his distress indicates they had troubles of their own – made reference to that near beginning of letter

Phil. 1:29 For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake

many miles apart but could genuinely feel each others’ pain – were both experiencing/suffering distress and trouble for Gospel

Paul doesn’t mention but… he suffered for sake of Gospel from beginning of his relationship w/them, jail in Philippi, so they really following his example

B. giving again and again  v.15-16  material

from the beginning

their habit of generous giving started soon after conversion and persisted – following apostle’s example in that respect also

missionary very careful not to be burden on local church plant – even new believers easily see how being bi-vocational could slow down evangelistic work

didn’t survey supporting to see how many dollars per member they were giving, then adjust to be in line w/ everyone else

Paul told Corinthians that church had truly gone not only according to ability, had gone beyond ability to give all they wanted

for the Gospel

affection for Paul certainly portion of reason for generosity but by no means only factor – not only trying to lessen Paul’s burden

also concerned for what their help would free him up to do… carry Gospel to more places and more people more quickly

certainly in Paul’s view that was far more important – appreciated material help to satisfy expenses, greater appreciation for how God used him to plant churches, strengthen leaders

continually looking beyond present to next place, where could he go with Gospel where hadn’t been preached yet

model for others

Corinthian church benefited from their example early on, so did everyone else in the neighborhood who had opportunity to read/hear Paul’s letter to them

no way to know how many millions have read both letters (2Cor and Phil) since and profited from them – see them in heaven

believers in Philippi didn’t think their generosity a burden: “in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality.” (2Cor. 8.2)

C. receiving more  v.17-18  spiritual / fruitfulness…worship

blessing more than the gift

Paul far more concerned with blessing from God for him, especially for them b/c of their generosity when they had little

the spiritual benefits, the fruitfulness they would display would multiply in their account, would be most obvious in heaven

really putting Jesus’ words to work: “lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven” – strive for ROI to be “collected” in heaven

helpful to the missionary

Paul at present “fully supported” and genuinely appreciated the gift, the one who delivered, all the affection included with it

for one in prison and facing an uncertain future (live or die) would be great encouragement – is not the only one fighting the good fight for the Gospel

if material resources would further the gospel cause, they supplied adequate for missionary to keep pressing on

well-pleasing to God

the end goal of their giving was advance of the Gospel for the sake of those impacted by it, not for any credit to them – of course God would be well-pleased

and God blesses the one who pleases him: Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

and we all know is no way we can out-give God – he dispenses from supply of “every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (Eph 1:3)

Generous giving is really an act of spiritual worship. Can be our time, talents, treasure or any combination. When given for purpose of advancing the Gospel, work of making disciples of all nations moves forward, those laborers sent to gather the harvest are blessed and God is pleased. And if God is pleased, we have done well.

In the Shadow of the Prophet

Jeremiah 45:1-5

flashback – ch.44 ends in Egypt some time after fall of Jerusalem, this takes place later in year from Jer. 36 when Jehoiakim burned Jeremiah’s first scroll piece by piece. Hear about Baruch 20+ times throughout book, only hear from him once when answered princes after reading scroll second time to them. Portrayed as faithful secretary who served God and Jeremiah, carefully recording words dictated to him. Did so only to see hard work literally go up in smoke. Then heard words from God… take another scroll… write it all down… again. Didn’t have advantage of autopen to write for him, not surprise if developed massive case of writer’s cramp.

Is a shock 45 chapters in to be told Baruch had other things on his mind than taking dictation. Seems he also had aspirations to other things yet he continued in appointed role until the end. Really like each of us, living in present and unable to reliably see even tomorrow. Also, like us, subject to discouragement in especially trying times. And they were days filled with much to break not only Jeremiah’s heart but Baruch’s also. He and Jeremiah both had love for God and country, grieved when neighbors persisted in rebelling against a good God.

Have opportunity here to see a little of what was behind Baruch’s public / professional face, realize there was nearly same level of emotion in writing down words as in speaking them. Also opportunity to see God’s gracious kindness toward Baruch. God met Baruch where he was but didn’t leave him there, powerful lesson for all who know his story.

A. Baruch’s complaint  v.1-3

the “silent one” spoke

first 36 chapters result of Baruch’s rewriting second edition – remaining chapters those things added later as foretold 36:32

except for occasional public appearance when sent on errands by Jeremiah, spends rest of time carrying out secretarial duties

his complaint / lament worthy of those in Psalms and other prophets describing profound depth of grief and sorrow and pain

Baruch in difficult spot – at least heard prophecy and wrote it down; might have heard Jeremiah preach it, then dictate as he wrote – could have heard prophecies of doom several times, felt weight of what God threatened

overcome with hopelessness

certainly clear when Jehoiakim destroyed scroll: something must change in attitudes from king on down to avert disaster

in mingling w/ common folk, hearing words of religious leaders, reports from palace, could come up with nothing to encourage

knows what God has said: do this or else – absolutely no wiggle room – knew God wouldn’t change his mind, no apparent “revival” happening that would satisfy God

getting same kind of indication from Jeremiah, no light at end of tunnel other than freight train of God’s just wrath on sinners

God heard

whether complained in Jeremiah’s hearing or not, God was listening and determined to respond – another time when “He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.”

God didn’t rebuke Baruch for complaining, indicating sorrowing and suffering for right reasons – concern for his people

also didn’t dismiss Baruch’s lament, tell him not to worry – received it as was intended, gave serious answer in return

like often true, probably not answer Baruch wanted to hear or amount of detail would have liked, he is satisfied now seeing more of God’s plan and his place in it

B. God’s answer  v.4

he’s still in control

God’s response first draws Baruch’s attention to God and away from current situation – he is God, has done will do as he said

identifies himself as YHWH, personal name, covenant name, making clear he is same faithful God to his people as always

is true even when he both promises hard things and does them – doesn’t mean he has turned against his people, in fact they turned against God by worshiping idols

he is keeping his promise (1:10)

reminds Baruch of what he wrote at beginning of scroll, that rebellious would be torn down, plucked up, in whole land

is what Baruch has seen happen and will continue until all God’s purpose is met – would be clear God was one making it happen

but… notice carefully closing words of God’s promise: “To root out and to pull down, To destroy and to throw down, To build and to plant.”

God would surely bring judgment and destruction on his people – he would also in his time and way build and plant

he protects his own (1:19)

already promised to Jeremiah “I am with you,” says the Lord, “to deliver you.” – will extend same promise of protection to Baruch in future

God not indiscriminate in carrying out judgment – same situation that is judgment for some is instead purification for others

God shows by care of Ebed-Melech and Baruch along with Jeremiah that individuals who trust him don’t get lost in big picture

C. Baruch’s future  v.5

great things?

seems Baruch had some aspirations God didn’t plan for him – not told exactly what, described by God as “great things for yourself”

since God restated his purpose to bring disaster on all humanity, perhaps Baruch hoped he and Jeremiah get credit for turning the tide for Jewish people

God’s purpose for Baruch and anyone else: faithfully do your best at performing task / filling role God has given to you

I wonder if Baruch thought his name / reputation / accomplishments would be known by millions world over for 2500+ years… as well as his thumb print

only temporal

for one with ambition, serving in shadow of great prophet like Jeremiah might be difficult, always known as the assistant

apparently kinds of “great things” Baruch had in mind not what would survive this life – better served by pursuing God’s plan

Jesus addresses this: Matt. 6:33 “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

God cares about life

would not only deliver from harm, would continue to protect it for remainder of his life w/o regard for place of residence

especially important in light of Jer 44.14 “none of the remnant of Judah who have gone into the land of Egypt to dwell there shall escape or survive”

God guarantees that Baruch would be among the few who survive going to Egypt – he should plan to use gift of life to best of ability for God’s glory

Whether our calling is to role in shadows or more prominent place of service, be sure of this: whatever we might aspire to, God has something for us that is as good or better. We can also be sure whether we understand or not, God cares about each one as individual and provides generously. What greater gift or blessing is there than life? Not just life for this life but for always. And it includes additional blessings we could never imagine.

The Rare Jewel of Contentment

Philippians 4:10-13

We can like what previous few verses promise: peace of God guarding hearts, God of peace present with us. Things every Christian values, some days more than others. Part about what was gained from apostle’s teaching and example, no itemized list to cover that. Easy to slide over that and get to part about “the God of peace”. Helped by positive commendation in first verse of text. Then comes that word so difficult to wear well – content. Since it’s in here, ought to put on list of things to try for, definitely not near the top, takes way too much work for that.

Contentment is a sweet, inward heart-thing. …It is a work of the Spirit indoors, …the inward submission of the heart. …Not only must the tongue hold its peace; the soul must be silent. …If the attainment of true contentment were as easy as keeping quiet outwardly, it would not need much learning. …It is a business of the heart. Jeremiah Burroughs, Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment

Ok, so maybe after we acquire just a few more things we can work on it. After kids grown, out of house, will have more time. Not how it is presented – “The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do”, not attempt, save for future. We know apostle’s circumstances as well as Philippian believers and also ours change – good days, hard days, and the like. He recognized it in his friends, commended them for how they handled real life.

One more thing: in our culture, are surrounded by things that fuel discontent – marketing designed to make you want what you don’t have. Easy credit designed to encourage buying what you can’t afford. Incentive to strive for excellence shifted to striving for abundance. If you work to learn contentment and live in light of it, will be part of small minority in world. Will certainly find favor with God for it, often ridicule from friends and neighbors.

A. compassion for others  v.10

their situation

they cared, no opportunity – daily life not always easy for 1st cent Christians – persecution real, often w/ great economic cost

didn’t stop caring – was response to Macedonian vision brought Gospel first to Philippi, then Europe, priceless treasure – had great love for one who first brought it, was carrying to others

finally had opportunity – not given detail what changed, obviously God had blessed above and beyond their own needs

commendable response

more than words – 1Jo 3:10, 18

“In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother… My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.”

don’t find expression “put your money where your mouth is” in Bible… principle certainly emphasized – words must have action

likely Philippian church rejoiced at being able finally to put loving care into tangible form – not about reward, payment, just love

Paul’s joy

rejoiced at expression of love, not that he could buy lunch only, but what meant about their spiritual health and well-being

knew sincerity – almost cost Epaphroditus his life to deliver gift to Rome – Paul’s response shows Epaphroditus typical of church

Paul’s joy had both present and future in view, how gift met present need and would enable further Gospel progress if he lived

B. satisfied with God’s provision  v.11-12

not natural

fallen man self-centered by nature – consider how large part discontent played in Adam and Eve’s first sinning… believed they needed what God had not supplied

not always desire for more stuff, comes out in other ways – desire for more recognition, higher social status, better looks

these things don’t have to be taught, don’t come naturally or easily to one born again – can always come back in future

must be learned

true satisfaction begins w/conversion, progresses w/sanctification – two things happen for Christian… new heart, renewed mind

doesn’t make them fully properly functioning from start – heart needs ongoing work, same for mind being renewed day by day

not really learning what contentment looks like, what boxes to check – relationship between us and circumstances/stuff second place – relationship with God in first place

Paul didn’t learn how to make do with much or little – did learn how to trust God and his provision in every kind of situation

starts with the heart

external “body language” important but not most important – outward appearance of calm resignation can mask brooding heart

condition of heart needs to be right: learn from God’s word and experience to trust him, recognize he does all things perfectly

keep destiny foremost: all God does designed to make us like Jesus – need / abundance, satisfied / hungry, plenty / nothing

God doesn’t beat us into molded shape, he loves his children – not only intends to make us look like Jesus, wants us to love him as Jesus does

because he loves us like he loves Jesus, he will never give us seconds – only and always gives what is right, best

C. dependence on Christ  v.13

does not mean

can do anything of own choosing, can be anything / anyone you want to be – world says you can, daily more ridiculous

definitely not magic words to make everything come out all right regardless – God doesn’t promise or intend to help us do what is not ours to do

does mean

can do what God calls us to do – he does ask us to do impossible… in own strength/resources… but possible w/his help

we can know he supplies all we need to do so – Bible / history / experience have many examples plus:

skip ahead couple weeks to v.19 – “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

result is blessing including contentment for ourselves and others, glory to God – more we depend on Christ, more effective we will be, more glory to God

reason for assurance

1Cor 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

God is sovereignly providing way of escape from situation he is sovereignly governing  – circumstance just as much part of God’s plan as his providence

Don’t fall into trap of thinking what you have for resources, strength, things, opportunities are not sufficient but would be content if there were more. Not only is his grace sufficient, Christ is sufficient. He can more than satisfy not only needs but wants. Don’t look for things of this world to meet your desire, ask Christ to fill your cup. And get ready to have it not only filled… but overflowing.
