God @ Work

Philemon 1:12-16

Over the years, number of scholars and theologians have chosen to consider letter to Philemon with criticism, wondering why letter dealing with such trivial mundane topic would be included in Bible.

“Of what account was the fate of a single insignificant slave, long since dead and gone, to those before whose eyes the battle of the creeds was still raging? This letter taught them nothing about questions of theological interest, nothing about matters of ecclesiastical discipline; and therefore they would have none of it. …It was wholly unworthy of the Apostle. If written by him, they contended, it must have been written when he was not under the influence of the Spirit: its contents were altogether so unedifying.” St Paul’s Epistles to the Colossians and Philemon, by J.B. Lightfoot

I do not share that perspective. Is much of theological significance in these relatively few lines. Approx, 10 years earlier, Paul wrote this: Gal 3.28 “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Story told here excellent picture of what happens when we bring Gospel down from theory to bear on everyday real-life situations. Everyone in this account had already experienced power of God at work in their life, would continue to do so.

How do attitudes / relationships change when God is at work? God doesn’t simply save from sin, do a little to get us started, then leave rest up to us. Continues work of making us like Jesus, Requires lots of things to be different as Paul indicates here. Perhaps didn’t provide all details we want, definitely gave enough to keep us busy.

A. Paul’s dilemma  v.12-14

what he does

he sends – makes arrangements incl. companion Tychicus to facilitate Onesimus’s return to Colosse and his master Philemon

he explains – wrote cover letter to help Philemon understand what happened, reason for Paul’s involvement and delayed return

he grieves – strong language – my very heart, part of myself – really painful loss for Paul, esp. so until hearing of Onesimus’ progress, future usefulness in Christian service

what he wants to do

keep Onesimus – his first choice, has quickly become useful helper – perhaps skilled at anticipating and meeting unspoken needs

grow their friendship – gone from nearly total stranger to family in record time, maybe relationship that just clicked plus Holy Spirit actively present in both

mentor for ministry – true skill set closet well-stocked but door locked and light off – Paul recognized conversion changed that

why it is right to do

considerate to Philemon – if Philemon a good steward of God-given resources, loss of Onesimus would be significant

preserve their friendship – final outcome not one of primary Gospel significance, not good enough reason to compromise friendship between Christian brothers

allow Philemon the initiative – provides opening for Philemon to give Paul blessing guaranteed  to be appreciated, receive blessing in return plus example for the church

B. Philemon’s benefit  v.15

God using Onesimus’s leaving for good

the difficulties – Rome’s population 500K+; 1200 miles; Paul’s confinement; chance encounter w/apostle highly unlikely

the result – seriously, would God have left scenario like this to mercy of random occurrences? even less likely, esp. given probable outcome of time spent w/Paul

useful today – helped Paul, probably Tychicus on journey, Philemon after he got “home”; greater usefulness in service to God

Philemon to receive a good gift

Onesimus immeasurably improved – might have been middle of the scale servant before, same work done same way with Christian spirit added is hugely different/better

substantial value in this life – improvement in Onesimus’s usefulness observed by others and add to Philemon’s reputation

not only now but also for forever – Paul expected relationship w/Onesimus to be mended and unlike before, last into next life

Philemon’s example to the church

opportunities for counsel – letter gives some of reasoning behind Philemon’s decision but not all – probably asked how he reached decision, have opportunity to explain

enlarged circle of influence – given time and place, Roman laws and practices, hard to imagine more difficult situation – navigating this well would raise confidence in Philemon’s wisdom

if Philemon agrees, show Heb 10:24 in action – And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works

C. Onesimus’s usefulness  v.16

was God’s doing

God selected him – Eph. 1:4 “He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,” – work logic backwards…

God directed him – to our view, he could have gone anywhere in world he wanted… instead went where easy to disappear

God connected him – once there, in way unknown to us, God connected him to only one in entire city to write for the church

altered every relationship

with Paul – someone relatively unknown becomes like son he doesn’t want to part with, better… a son in the faith…forever

with Philemon – regardless of Roman legal standing, in sight of God and his people were now beloved Christian brothers

with the church – whether legal status as Philemon’s property retained or not, no longer a consideration… equal opportunity for ministry to all incl. Philemon

useful to everyone

as an employee… in the home and workplace – better equipped to be more efficient and effective in all he does

as a fellow-servant… side-by-side w/Philemon – able to contribute to ministry work more fully as co-laborer with leaders

as a child of God… to his Heavenly Father – probably greatest consideration for Paul, recognizing how useful Onesimus could be in advancing Christ’s kingdom through Gospel work

In every part of Onesimus’s adventure here is easy to see God at work. Onesimus in many ways not out of ordinary… God just as much at work in our lives, not as apparent to us many times. Were many ways God worked on outside – arranging Onesimus’s travel plans, contacts with people, much more we don’t know about. God does same for us, often to bring about similar results.

Is also important work God was doing inside Onesimus, by power of Holy Spirit to change him from inside out – giving new heart responsive to him, new desires to want what God wants, new sight to see and understand things before hidden from him. God does all those things in us and our lives too.

God had expectations for Onesimus, what he expected Onesimus to do with all these new things. He expected Onesimus’s outside to match his inside, show in visible ways he was becoming like Jesus, more like Jesus. Some of the changes pretty dramatic and obvious, others would take time and effort to grow and produce fruit. We can count on Heavenly Father to be present with us, in us by his Holy Spirit every hour of every day working to help us become like his Son the Lord Jesus. He will enable and equip us to live for Jesus, do what pleases him, introduce friends and neighbors to him.

Babylon Is Fallen

Jeremiah 51:1-64

Babylon had long history – dating back 2000 or so years to first biblical reference Gen. 11, after Flood and before dispersion of nations. General character of its people largely unchanged – began w/ construction of ziggurat or tower and shrine at summit. Intent for man to achieve god-status by own efforts. Nebuchadnezzar upped the ante w/ gold overlaid image, command to worship. Pride grown to where everything upside down, man makes own god to worship, declaring Babylon’s kingdom to be eternal one.

Became symbol / poster child for pride, arrogance, rebellion against God and his authority. Whether actual empire of the prophets or painted woman of Revelation, God leaves no question about who is true sovereign w/ eternal kingdom. Serves as both encouragement and warning depending on where loyalty lies. As symbol has been applied to variety of locations and entities since NT times, especially building from imagery found in Revelation. Whether John’s account references only Roman Catholic church or not as many believe, lessons from Babylon apply to many places and nations.

Whether we think are at risk from Babylon, living in Babylon, observing Babylon at distance, God makes no mistakes. He has limits but looks after his children well.

A. run for your lives  (6,45-46, 49-50)

escape indicates trust

important introduction to this section: YHWH declares intention to act decisively using agents he raises up against Babylon

this far more than punishment for misbehavior with intent to correct – is in part to warn all who see what judgment is like

a counter-intuitive message, how could Babylon ever fall, who will believe warning – this only warning, no other indication

those who trust prophet and believe God’s declaration will escape destruction, no guarantees for those remaining behind

remember your hope

warning repeated along with extent of destruction described – as Babylon has done to others, so will be done to her (49)

urgency to warning, hurry up and get far away… but to go where? remember YHWH, seems far away but is still Lord of covenant he made

add to that later promises through Jeremiah of restoration: “I will bring back Israel to his home… I will pardon” (49:19-20)

hard thing to do b/c it’s personal but… remember Jerusalem – as she was overthrown, so will Babylon be, but you restored

B. perhaps she can be healed  (8-9, 53)

pity the rebellious lost

when enemy is humiliated, first response often to celebrate – not what is encouraged here, instead expected to do opposite

desire has been, ours should be for healing of enemies rather than destruction, followed by sorrow when they aren’t

as bad as judgment in this life is, cannot compare with eternal judgment – should pity those who stubbornly die in their sins

beyond redemption?

not possible for us to know all factors present in God’s action but gives the appearance of line in sand, no hope beyond

we know God does exactly as he chooses, for Babylon chose not to be patient any longer but instead bring just punishment

God not in as much hurry as we, took Canaanites 400 years – we don’t know God’s timelines for Babylons in today’s world

do know he may choose to begin judgment in this life, warning of same should be part of witnessing to persistent rebels

more reason to hope

clear assurance from example of Babel and words here – as mighty as Babylon appears, will never overthrow true God

even if she were able to achieve her goals, God still has sufficient resources to bring about his purpose for his people

regardless of appearances, how dire situation of God’s people looks, is not a real contest, God gloriously prevails over enemies

both Bible and history filled with examples of God doing God things like he said he would, they really should have listened

C. this is our God

all-powerful  (15-17)

prior to Hebrew children leaving Egypt God humiliated Egypt’s gods, showed total supremacy over them, incl. Pharaoh

similar point here, is the true God speaking through prophet who has ultimate power and all he need do is speak

oh yes, don’t forget, he is Israel’s God, his army way bigger, more powerful than any other… Lord of heaven’s armies

answers prayer  (34-36)

if people reach conclusion based only on what they can see, might think many times God not hearing and answering prayer

God’s timing and methods often much different from what those praying to him expect but… he has not forgotten

not simply  responding to insults to his people – God takes sins of world’s Babylons personally b/c they are meant that way

defender  (36)

God responds to cries of his people… again, declares what he will do – will both stand up for them and take vengeance

those who trust God will not be disappointed – God’s defense far more effective than anything they might try to do

think ahead to Belshazzar, perhaps grandson of Nebuchadnezzar – feast using Temple utensils, no wonder God was angry

just  (24,49,56)

God declares he will repay Babylon for their evil – not like human payback often excessive, God stops when paid in full

because God is just and the one sinned against, he must repay evil for evil – justice demands satisfactory repayment for injury

God’s justice can be satisfied two ways, either by individual or by substitute – God’s using evil for good does not relieve individual responsibility

D. this is our Babylon

idols  (17-18)

idolatry #1 issue for Babylon, her enemies, even Israel – practice continues in all subsequent peoples who follow her example

some days hard to distinguish between idols: self, science, stuff, strength – those predominate on culture’s God-shelf

my rights; thus says the scientist; pursuit of bigger/better/more expensive; pursuit of power, means to exercise it

violence  (20-23)

every aspect of violence on increase, not just frequency – more ways for violence to be expressed, broader scope of harm

by no means limited to our culture/nation – more than enough to go around worldwide, plenty of places on increase

yet God remembers  (5)

that we have Jeremiah’s prophecy and following history clear evidence God heard and answered prayers of his faithful

no cause to think God has changed, somehow will forget his people now – have witness of John how it will end

Rev. 19:1-3, 6 After these things I heard a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, “Alleluia! Salvation and glory and honor and power belong to the Lord our God! “For true and righteous are His judgments, because He has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication; and He has avenged on her the blood of His servants shed by her.” Again they said, “Alleluia! Her smoke rises up forever and ever!”  …And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!

We must be alert, not get sucked in by world’s pressure to think and act wrongly. At same time, don’t be discouraged. Have read last chapter, know how it all turns out – the Lamb wins! Meanwhile…

Unprofitable or Profitable?

Philemon 1:8-11

Think how the world counts status – imprisoned apostle vs free citizen at liberty; runaway slave vs aged apostle; slave vs master. What apostle Paul writes here turns estimation of many on its head, stands in stark contrast to how interpersonal relationships function both among professed Christians and others. Certainly not new, shows how often important principles get overlooked.

Paul begins here to address highly sensitive issue that directly affected Philemon, his household, and church meeting in home. Know from other letters Paul didn’t lack words to say precisely what was on his mind. More than one way to approach important topic, what would be best in this situation may be one of things kept Paul awake nights. First, he wanted to do only what would please Christ. Second, wanted outcome to please Christ in every respect, on part of everyone concerned. Then there is Holy Spirit’s desire what he wrote be profitable for all Christ-followers who would read letter.

Paul also keenly aware his method being observed by ones who might be faced with similar situation, would be helped by having example to follow. Then the bit about interactions with family / community members seeing situation play out. If they were to give good answers to questions, needed to understand from God’s perspective and embrace solution wholeheartedly. Paul didn’t need to rely solely on own wisdom to sort all this out, had assistance of Holy Spirit to direct thoughts and words to good conclusion.

A. true humility  v.8

genuine status

Paul’s place in early NT church not really in question – had been challenged about it… by those who wanted to discredit him

was recognized by many in Europe and Asia Minor as an apostle – didn’t just listen to him, asked for his help solving issues

is apparent his letters we have treated from beginning as carrying great weight, recognized as rightly belonging in Bible

right to command

since Paul commissioned to ministry by Christ himself, called by Christ “a chosen vessel of mine” (Acts 9:15) had authority

really speaking as ambassador of Christ, like other apostles, speaking in Christ’s name like Old Testament prophets did

w/i scope of his commission to simply tell Philemon what to do, how he and others in similar situation should act

set it aside

chose to set all that aside and rest his persuasion on friendship and fellowship – all they shared b/c of relationship with Christ

Paul not first to make that kind of choice, opting not to exercise authority at crucial time – Jesus when before Pilate, e.g.

his approach meant was far more likely restored relationships not “poisoned” by resentment, result of forced outcome

B. unfeigned love  v.9

for the sake of love

kind of love Paul cites here without conditions – strives for what is best for the other person, sacrificing self if necessary

he doesn’t specify whose love he means – love for Christ, for each other, for Onesimus, or all of the above… probably

each would add weight to Paul’s argument, all together should make good lasting outcome highly likely

from an old man

“If Paul did refer to himself here as an old man (which, around the age of sixty, he was indeed entitled to do),”  F F Bruce, age 74 at time of writing

same word translated “elder”, often referring to position of responsibility in local church… yet Paul already set that aside

if anything, Paul expecting a hearing out of respect for advanced years, plus wisdom/maturity that goes with age

uncertain future

sure, Paul asks Philemon to get guest room ready for his visit but… Paul not naive – knows his imprisonment has no guarantees

has strong desire to go to Colosse but at same time knows God may have other plans… will be ok with that

also knows at his age, not a kid, ability to continue in ministry not inexhaustible – his time will come to an end

C. side-by-side appeal  v.9-10a

come alongside

intended to draw parties close together, not keep at arm’s length – come close so we can work this out together

desire to treat one another as close friends working together toward shared outcome… same as believer and Holy Spirit

for the sake of Christ

Christ is thread from beginning to end of letter – just as Christ is present throughout, he must be present in final outcome

Paul not interested in Philemon or anyone else doing what he requests simply to appease him, satisfy his desire

entire purpose here to bring glory to Christ in way obvious to everyone… including community at large

and for Onesimus

Paul discreet about giving personal details about Onesimus – he was slave, probably runaway, now presented as Paul’s son

probably had seen church started and grow, heard regular teaching from God’s word, seen how people brought into group

Paul believed it essential Philemon and rest behave properly toward Onesimus to avoid causing hurt or discouragement

D. what changed  v.10b-11

my son

don’t know how Paul and Onesimus introduced, one of those series of events God brought about for his purpose

referred to Timothy as his son in the faith – Onesimus not believer when first introduced, occurred later

Paul instrumental in leading Onesimus like Timothy to saving faith in Christ – others involved along the way, Paul at conclusion

was unprofitable

Paul used Onesimus’ name to set up description of what happened – Onesimus name means profitable or useful

while serving Philemon, were limits to his usefulness both in his household and also toward church family

was especially unprofitable after he ran away – would have been compounded if he had taken anything of value from Philemon

now has purpose

whole new way of understanding opened up to Onesimus – can recognize / use spiritual truth in way impossible before

seems from next section of letter he was quick study, growing rapidly as things once hidden now made sense, useful to him

enabled him to be great help to apostle in his ministry, probably something Philemon never thought of as possible

Really begins in earnest at the cross, but doesn’t end there. We give glory to God when someone comes to faith in Christ, continue to give glory to him as we grow in grace, in likeness to Christ. Much cause to give glory that apostle had blessing of supplying last necessary piece in Onesimus’ salvation. We can do same when God provides same opportunity. Can also give him the glory as we observe all the ways new child of God grows in their usefulness to him. Sometimes it begins with simple request “come with me”. God uses that and multiplies the blessings from there.

The Work of God

Jeremiah 50:1-46

Nebuchadnezzar had a dream, woke him up but couldn’t remember. God graciously gave Daniel knowledge of dream and its interpretation. Would be succession of kingdoms, each more extensive and powerful than previous but more corrupt. Each kingdom striving to be the Superpower dominating rest of known world. What is described here portion of drama that would play out over several centuries. Assyrian dreams of grandeur had been stymied by Babylon but… Babylon’s turn was coming… soon. God intended there be no misunderstanding about who was really in charge, using these events to bring about his purpose.

Babylon’s history makes it very plain: is not safe to be mean to God’s people. God takes it personally when those he loves are mistreated whether by active means or more benign neglect. Not our place to put God on some kind of timetable but… he will not overlook forever suffering of those who love him. He will act on their behalf and in way that displays his superiority over his enemies and their false gods. He never overreacts, never goes beyond what represents justice, always with the purpose that he be glorified for who he is and in what he does.

This something we don’t mind reading about, God gloriously prevailing over his enemies. Not what we would volunteer to experience firsthand. Jews probably rejoicing at news their enemy, Babylon, would be overthrown. At same time, wondering if God would manage to do all he said and avoid causing harm to his people in process. By his words to Jeremiah God makes plain he knows what he is doing and promises good to those who trust him.

A. they will seek  v.4-7

hardship finally has results

after seeing how hard life gets for family/friends, often wonder how painful must it get before they smarten up and seek God

at least some come to understand truth about futility of trusting self and idols even though had been deceived then abandoned

in case of Jews, required serious suffering – “the return from exile was well-lubricated with tears”… for losses, for their sin

they embrace truth

this more than satisfying desire to return “home” to native land – Zion represented God’s home to those asking directions

were seeing it as return to YHWH in role as God of covenant – shows what kind of relationship they were seeking to have

stated intent covered their own and all future generations – intention to do their part so YHWH, covenant never forgotten again

the mighty fall

scene from another “camera” much different, focused on dramatic things happening to Babylon, til now thought to be invincible

would be an alliance of nations that defeat, overthrow, obliterate Babylon, leaving behind only desolation, uncovered for 2000 years

from beginning of God’s declaration, false gods shamed, broken in pieces, humiliated – iow, shown to be powerless, useless

B. “I will pardon”  v.19-20

he restores

remember, Jews are in exile… in Babylon… Assyria – if armies leave behind only barren wasteland, what about Jews?

God doesn’t forget, tells what he will do: yes, enemies punished But… he will restore his sheep, Israel and Judah to their home

way more happening than simple movement of nations / people pursuing political or practical or economic goals

he blesses

no surprise God restores his sheep to luxuriant pasture – wasteland for enemies, abundance intended for his friends

does involve material supply, but goes far beyond meeting need – God’s provision will fully satisfy, “eat until they are full”

since he doesn’t abandon his people, will supply good shepherds to feed, guide, guard flock, also the “great Shepherd”

he forgives

temporal blessings are nice, have greater value when accompanied by spiritual blessing – included as part of promise

should be received as good news by people of all time: God says “I will pardon those whom I preserve” – did not leave Adam / Eve in Garden after sin

God wouldn’t do the easy thing, deliver from persecutors, but not the hard thing. deliver from greatest persecutor… sin

C. their Redeemer is strong  v.33-34

the Almighty rescues

can easily believe God had more in mind than Babylonians/Assyrians as captors (33) who refused to release captives

returning Jews to Israel just an example of far greater deliverance God has been doing since Garden, deliverance from sin/Satan

Jesus declared was an integral part of his mission: “to proclaim liberty to the captives” – “today this scripture is fulfilled” Luk 4:18-21

the Almighty takes their side

their strong Redeemer accomplishes it by pleading their case, taking their side, being their advocate in God’s courtroom

does so by literally putting himself in place of his people, then holding up his merit and sacrifice to satisfy demands of justice

given who he is, LORD Sabaoth is his name (v.2,656), he must prevail, outcome cannot be in question, his people delivered

the Almighty gives rest

he intends to bring peace and rest to whole earth, not just Israel – is right to keep looking for Messiah… to finish what he started and bring to full fruition

was seen in part at time of return under Cyrus/Ezra – did enjoy measure of peace for a time, only partial in scope and duration

we hope for day when LORD of hosts will return to eradicate sin from earth along with all nasty stuff that goes with it – then the land, the world will truly have rest

D. the work of the Lord God of hosts  v. 24-25

Babylon is clueless

Babylon content to look around, evaluate what they saw – should have looked up, recognized God over all on the move

walked into trap God had set – had given complete freedom to pursue own desires regardless of God’s position on their actions

like majority of Jews had placed full confidence in other-than-God, weren’t looking for him, didn’t recognize him

the unseen Commander

Babylonians far from alone, only small portion of humanity any different and recognize hand of God in world events, even now

God didn’t force any of world leaders to do anything they didn’t want – he simply used their desires to advance redemptive plan

can see in results God did not approve what evil people / leaders / nations were doing, true for own people as well

both just and merciful

God punished Babylon b/c he loved his people, hated sin, must satisfy demands of justice in this life and next

at very same time, b/c he loved his people, showed mercy to them… including those who had sinned same as Babylonians

God didn’t just get out an eraser, forget about their sin – sent strong Redeemer to deliver them from their sin so could no longer be found

This the wonderful truth we can confidently proclaim to all who will listen – Lord Jesus has paid penalty in full for all the sins of every believer. B/c he is God-Man whose sacrifice is guarantee, no possible way we can exhaust his supply of forgiveness. By no means are we to take advantage of his mercy. However, can tell friends and loved ones if they will but turn from their sin, throw themselves on Christ and his mercy, he will not turn them away. Will graciously forgive their sin, cleanse from unrighteousness, bring into God’s family as his child. Why would he do that? 1 John 4:10 “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

Effective Sharing

Philemon 1:4-7

English a wonderful language – “Lexicographer Susie Dent has cited about 20,000 words as a typical active vocabulary size for an adult English speaker” from total count of half million or more. Yet even for all precision that many words allows in communication, is important feature missing in English but present in other languages, even earlier forms of English. In this letter, “you” “your” occur 34 times total yet have no way to distinguish between singular and plural. e.g. “Grace to you” (3) plural, “mention of you” (4) singular. Reverts to plural you in closing verse. Why important?

This much more than just private letter to friend with “oh by the way” acknowledgment of others close by. Yes, bulk of letter addresses situation between Philemon and Onesimus but the whole is wrapped in address to entire house church. Is in part b/c Onesimus’ circumstances affects them too; is valuable for everyone to learn from what Paul writes… and not only about the runaway. In fact, almost halfway through letter before gets to that subject.

Beginning in v.4 Paul draws attention to some important things with regard to Philemon, also his own attitude and actions toward them. Certainly intended to encourage Philemon, also more on his mind. By highlighting these things, Paul expressing desire for similar to be present and displayed by all in Christ’s church. Must not forget Paul’s example here, demonstrating for all who heard letter read how they can think about and encourage others.

A. prayers of others  v.4

frequent theme

early verses of most letters include some kind of prayer, blessing, reference to prayer, giving thanks for recipients

some have numerous references to prayer or doxology, e.g. Rom 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!

not saying only to be polite or only to encourage readers – would refresh their hearts, his desire went far beyond that

usually for others

occasionally prayed / asked prayer for himself, close of Ephesians, asked prayer for words and boldness in preaching Gospel

far more often “making mention” of those to whom he writes, thanking God for them, asking for things for them

like request for self, requests for others had Gospel / spiritual focus – too often our praying is limited, practical/physical needs… should not neglect spiritual needs

essential God-given means

easy to remember things in Lord’s Prayer – daily bread, forgiveness, God’s will… should pray… and thank for those things

remember these two things:

Matt. 7.7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

James 4.2  …you do not have because you do not ask.

applies just as much to spiritual things: growth in understanding / maturity / Christ-likeness, for fellow believers and selves

B. personal love and faith  v.5

the real deal

had heard report of what was happening in church there, perhaps from Epaphras – kind of things to warm pastor’s heart

Philemon’s faith not flash in the pan, burning quickly/brightly, then going out – was kind that endured and produced fruit

is the expected result of faith in Christ, especially when shared in common – evident as saints show love for one another

his reputation

faith not kept hidden, separate from other parts of life – faith in Christ, if essential to who we are, must be obvious in all of life

definitely not limited to time spent together in church – life not rightly segmented into church, family, public circles

kind of love that looks for opportunities to express broadly – first to those who already share faith, then ones who need to

sound evidence

most acquaintances would not see faith first, would see works first – brothers would see / experience works and praise God

generous expressions of love in tangible ways even without words speak volumes about belief and character of person

C. gifts from Christ  v.6

given to be shared

Paul had well defined outcome in mind when he prayed for them – that their sharing together in common faith would produce substantial results for all of them

that faith given to them would be shared liberally – as one grows, encourages others to grow stronger, bolder, more confident

from him to him

every good thing, every blessing has ultimate source in Christ – may be expressed through person but starts with Christ

experiencing blessing from Christ works to increase knowledge of him, understanding of how he works in lives of his people

all together fuels love for God and love for neighbor, adds to praise and glory given back to him for his goodness to us

some is good, more is better

these things already present in some measure in Philemon and rest of church – if not Paul wouldn’t have heard about it

desired outcome is more of what they had – greater more obvious likeness to Christ increasingly obvious to one another and watching world

D. encouragement for the saints  v.7

giving encourages giving

sharing / fellowship that begins with faith in Christ confirmed by indwelling Holy Spirit encourages heart, not only mind

when heart motivated by love, will find expression… cannot be hidden, will be displayed in generous actions/giving to others

example encourages questions

actions not hidden from ones present with church family who are not yet committed to following Christ in faith

also not hidden from friends and neighbors, taking notice of how we behave toward one another… and them

more Christ-like we become, more often will recognize opportunities to acknowledge good gifts Christ has bestowed on us

God is glorified

this really bottom line for Christian, that God be glorified starting with us, expanding outward and embracing people from every tribe and tongue and people and nation

is something we should encourage in one another and from everyone we meet in all walks of life

Doesn’t matter how many times we hear truth from God’s word, need to hear it again. Need to ask for God’s help to understand it, apply it properly, make more part of who we are. Requires prayer and meditation and encouragement. With God’s help, together we can encourage one another to grow more effective as God’s children, be even more ready to meet him when he calls us home.

Most High Over All the Earth

Jeremiah 49:1-39

Hard to read story of Jewish people and not wonder about all troublemakers surrounding them on three sides. Hebrew children had their issues during 40 years between Moses and Joshua but… didn’t improve when they got to Canaan. Wouldn’t it have been better for them if weren’t so many temptations around, incentives to sin against God? Besides, enemies did some pretty mean/hurtful things to Israelites. How long would God tolerate those who were tormenting his people? How long would God tolerate those who were sinning so grievously against themselves? sinning so terribly against God?

Have answer to “how long” here. Probably not as soon as we would have acted, Israelites wanted him to act. Did act in his time and way, God took credit for actions of judgment against nations even though he used human agents to carry out his purpose. Don’t forget: God did not force those agents to act against their will. They all did just what they wanted, not always with results they wanted/expected. God purposely used their own freely expressed evil desires to accomplish his own ends with them often receiving dose of own medicine.

Considering who many of Israel’s enemies were descended from could reach conclusion they were genetically pre-programmed to act as they did. If so, should we think of it as disease of some kind and not hold accountable for actions, not criminally responsible? God didn’t think that way, we shouldn’t either. Sin nature or not, every person w/o exception morally responsible before God for choices and actions. At same time be thankful God is both just and merciful, would be survivors with opportunity to repent and follow him.

A. five enemies

Ammonites  v.1-6  (Jordan, NW)

Lot’s son/grandson, descendants in regular conflict along w/allies (sometimes cousins, Moabites) from time of judges on

took advantage of Israel’s misfortunes after Assyrian conquest in north, acted similarly and were allied w/ Nebuchadnezzar

symbols of power incl. Molech would be carried away as spoils of war, Israel eventually assume control of Ammonite territory

Edomites  v.7-22  (Jordan, S; Saudi Arabia, NW)

descended from Esau (plus others); made Hebrew children go around; even after severe judgment, poster child: Herod Antipas, ordered John’s death, complicit with Pilate later; son Herod Agrippa killed James, struck by God for presumption

by God’s plan would be reduced to insignificance, excessive confidence replaced by fear and uncertainty… would they survive

Arameans  v.23-27  (Damascus, Syria)

grandson of Nahor (Abraham’s brother), ruled Israel until conquered by Assyrians; supported with chariots and men by Ahab

included in their “people group” Amorites, Canaanites, Jebusites, Hivites – negative influence on Israel thru worship of Baal

Kedar  v.28-33  (Bedouin/Palestinian Arabs; NW Saudi Arabia)

second son of Ishmael – Ishmael foretold to be wild and hostile toward everyone else who would return the favor

seems descendants intended to carry on tradition – hostile actions would be turned against them, lose wealth and home

Elamites  v.34-39  (Persia/Iran/Susa)

capitol city of Elam was Susa / Shushan, hotbed of intrigue incl. serious plot intended to completely wipe out Jews

is vendetta pursued at times with great vigor by current government, Iran, and publicly stated determination to erase Israel

God would allow their enemies to prevail and destroy them… but not completely – some captured but God would restore

B. promised for destruction

because of their evil

each of nations had very long history of being active enemies of God and his people, subverting God’s laws at every opportunity

practiced evil against neighbors for selfish reasons, not just Jews – source doesn’t matter, it all displeases God

greatest evil their idol worship, substituting small ideas and gods for true God – unspeakable evil their practice of child sacrifice

at times they went beyond practicing evil to purposely inciting others, esp. Jews, to join in destructive practice

because of God’s justice

God is just, perfectly and completely, without any errors of judgment – requires, rightly, justice be satisfied in same way

are no stated parameters for how / when satisfaction occurs – may be some now / rest later -or- none now / all later

God acts in judgment in this life to show clearly not empty threats, means what he says – even if he seems late, justice will not fail and he never overreacts

because of God’s love

since God is love, must be factor somewhere, somehow in God’s actions toward enemies of him and his people

as hard as God’s judgment carried out in this life is, eternal judgment far worse – is loving to warn of future disaster

diminishing threat from enemies loving toward his people regardless of heritage, whether Jews or from neighboring nation

C. God’s grace for some

widows and orphans  v.11

often the unnumbered casualties of war and the most vulnerable incl. after hostilities end, have particular place on God’s radar

God has strong words for irresponsible man: 1 Tim. 5:8 “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”

have no one to protect from danger or provide for needs, few available options for meeting own needs, why God fills in (Ps 68.5)

hope for Ammon and Elam  v.6, 39

God commits to “bring back the captives” of both – would be severe destruction but would not be complete – will be survivors

more important, they won’t fall through the cracks out of sight – God will be involved in their restoring… in his time

strongly implied a reversal of ill fortune, restoring to some kind of well-being – not dependent on passing probation, simply God showing compassion for unfortunate casualties from conflict

and hope for us

regardless of what we see happening in world, know that God has not delegated responsibility to anyone else for governing world

God not oblivious to all that is wrong in our broken world – will correct or chastise according to his perfect plan

in bring judgment God doesn’t miss, never says “oops, sorry bout that” – no cause for us to be fearful, anxious, discouraged

“Kidner quotes an old saying: “One was saved, that none might despair yet only one, that none might presume.” God’s promise of grace for Elam teaches us not to despair. There is grace enough for God’s enemies At the same time, God’s judgment against Edom, Damascus, Kedar, and Hazor is a warning not to presume upon God’s grace. There is no hope for anyone who trusts anything except the mercy that God has shown in Jesus Christ.” Ryken

Everyone who seeks their satisfaction in God will be abundantly rewarded for their troubles. He cares perfectly for his own, provides perfect place of refuge from all that would cause harm. He can be trusted to do what is best and right for his people.

The Church in Your House

Philemon 1:1-3

Much change in “cultural landscape” during lifetime of many here. Consider things like: one-room school (Donna W); corner store (Jimmy Brooks); neighborhood church (N. & E. Limington) => consolidated school; box store; multi-site church campus. Sometimes argument from “economies of scale” – think how much we’ll save if…; all things we can do if…; all the benefits of having… this, that, other. How often is serious consideration given to costs of things w/o dollar value but get sacrificed along the way? Matter of grave concern especially when focus of attention is the church.

Paul directs greeting to individuals and also the church in Philemon’s home. 10+ years from Lydia to Philemon – think how church family can change over time, how many present who weren’t at the  beginning. Yet Paul sees no need to do more than give name and circumstance of prisoner. Perhaps presuming everyone who heard letter read would have some idea who wrote it. Presumed they would also know the others called by name. When local church no longer has that level of relationship with one another, have begun to lose their way… what it means to be a church.

Paul piles up titles—“brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier”—showing increasing intensity: family bond, co-labor, then battle partner. Paul doesn’t explain, however he clearly chose words judiciously in all letters we have. Also use of “our”: our brother; our beloved friend and fellow laborer; [beloved] our sister; our fellow soldier. Impossible in that kind of setting to simply “slide in, slide out”. So what can we learn about house church at Philemon’s?

A. fellow laborer – Philemon

beloved

term that carries substantial weight, not how would describe simple acquaintance or somone in comparable position/role

signifies level of knowledge / closeness that takes time to develop – things you know about “beloved” other people don’t

implies degree of satisfaction w/ relationship and desire for it to continue – mutual desire for shared time, experience, closeness

Matt. 3:17 “a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

worker

“fellow worker” focuses on shared ministry activity – term Paul used often, not gender specific, e.g Priscilla & Aquila (Rom 16.3)

number of settings, varying roles and levels of responsibility – have this in common: working according to calling in Gospel ministry, with Paul immediately or at great distance

more detail in next section of letter, know from start Paul’s great respect for Philemon and how God has used for good of church

if Apphia was wife, could easily expect she was important team member, working with Philemon in mutually supportive way

B. fellow soldier – Archippus

side by side

“fellow soldier” adds the idea of standing side by side in spiritual warfare and costly suffering, marking a stronger emphasis on tested commitment

Paul intentionally working on front lines – Rom. 15.20 And so I have made it my aim to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build on another man’s foundation

specially demanding when at end of supply line, pushing Gospel forward into areas where no nearby Christians to support efforts

common enemy

whether under house arrest in Rome or in meeting area in Philemon’s home, enemy not far away yet always vigilant

reasons might be different but both Paul and Archippus represented serious threat to Satan/… b/c of who empowered them

people present everywhere who could be reached by Gospel – everyone knows someone not yet committed to following Jesus

shared suffering

Paul’s list of afflictions, experiences of suffering far above and beyond what any of us expect to be our lot… we hope

each one’s experiences are different but… Jesus made plain in his teaching there is substantial cost to following/serving him

God often graciously enables to see tough times as other than suffering, focusing on good things he is accomplishing

C. fellow believers

assembly

group of people called together, gathered together in one place for purpose – no inherent size, more about kind than number

descriptions of early church gatherings cover variety of settings – first 200+ years of church, no specially designated building

Christians gathered where they could – inside, outside, caves, wooded areas – wherever satisfied need, perhaps some protection

common purpose

word use in NT usually refers to gathering for worship – exact order of worship not printed for us, what did/did not include

involved reading of Scripture (e.g. Jesus, Nazareth), some before it “officially” thought of as such… this letter from Paul

also included breaking bread, iow Lord’s Table, prayer and praise – same basic elements that make up worship today

overlapping friend list

would be united by common purpose, worship, and common relationship – each a child of God worshiping w/brothers & sisters

would also have mutual relationships with others from community – neighbors, coworkers, other family members

D. blessing

grace first

of course God is gracious – Ex. 34:6 And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth,

don’t presume, take it for granted, Paul didn’t even for others – asked/prayed for God to continue being gracious

is really 2nd thing… love comes first… love for Son spread also to us – b/c God loves, calls us out of world into his family

love has nothing to do w/ merit, neither any of blessings God pours out on his own whom he loves – depends entirely on Jesus

peace included

peace one of first blessings… peace with God, no longer enemies b/c Jesus by death applied to us reconciles to Father

then there’s peace from God that in process takes away fear – John 14.27 “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

from Father and Son

grace and peace extended to us from both Father and Son in accomplishing our salvation draws us closer to God

if God is point toward which we all are being drawn, requires us being drawn closer to one another at same time

God’s overarching love fueling grace and peace grows appreciation/love for each other, valuing time spent together serving one another, showing world what family should be like

Is not place where we meet or what hymnbook we use or number of people or denominational label that is most important. What is of greatest importance is the work God does in us when we are gathered together, the work God does through us all the time as we obey and serve him. Begins with what Jesus accomplished at Calvary and empty tomb, will be completed when we see him coming “coming in the clouds with great power and glory”. Meanwhile, live between those events, if trust in Christ as Savior it can definitely be well with our souls.
